What is Horny Goat Weed?

epimedium

Horny goat weed is an herb, which has leaves that are used to create medicine. While many know it by this name, it is known to scientists, herbologists, and gardening enthusiasts as Epimedium, or Barrenwort. It gets the nickname “horny goat weed” because of the legend that is attached to it. The story goes that a goat herder was watching his goats one day, and he noticed that they became sexually aroused after eating this particular herb. The name is appropriate as it is most commonly known and used as a sexual performance supplement.

While there has been limited scientific research done on the herb, there are lab tests that confirm this plant contains a chemical called icariin, which does act like Viagra. The problem is that it includes a small amount, so you may need to take a large dose to feel the effect.

History: The Origin Of Epimedium

While it is known and used throughout North America, this herb is originally from China. It is known by its Chinese name, yin yang huo. It also grows in some parts of Asia and the Mediterranean. Horny goat weed contains an active ingredient known as icariin. This is what is responsible for many of it’s positive, healthy effects.

While it is used in China as an alternative medicine for a variety of conditions, it’s primary use is still to treat sexual performance issues – erectile dysfunction being the most popular. Erectile dysfunction is a common ailment among men, especially those between 40 and 70 years old. Almost 20 million men in the United States suffer from the condition in one way or another. There are many causes such as depression and anxiety, which may either cause or contribute to erectile dysfunction.

Uses & Benefits Of Horny Goat Weed

While horny goat weed is generally known for its use in enhancing sexual performance, it does have quite a few other uses. It can be used to improve a weak back and knees or to help with joint pain. Some use it to help alleviate symptoms of arthritis. It can also be used to enhance mental and physical fatigue, as well as to prevent memory loss. It also contains phytoestrogens, which can act a little bit like estrogen, and reduce bone loss in post-menopausal women. There are also rumors that it can help reduce symptoms during menopause, but this has not been proven or tested.

Unfortunately, horny goat weed has not been profoundly studied. There have been limited lab tests done, and even then, a lot of them were conducted on animals rather than humans. However, as more studies are done, we may begin to see impressive results. Eventually, we may see horny goat weed is used more widely as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and other conditions related to sexual performance.

Not everyone likes taking pills and medications all the time, and things like erectile dysfunction and low libido can be frustrating and embarrassing enough as it is. It will be beneficial to everyone if these conditions could start being treated more naturally.
